Cycad Sanctuary is proudly owned by Dr. Rudie van Niekerk, who, in 1973 planted his first cycad seed and he hasn’t stopped since. We are currently planting roughly 20’000 seeds a year. This is quite a large scale propagation operation if you consider that every 4 years these plants get re-bagged, currently at a rate of about 10’000 plants per year. This means that cones, taxonomic names, seeds, prickly pinnae and pollen are as common on our property as a rainy day here on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

Having acquired a lot of knowledge, plants of various genera and cycad friends over the years, we often invite private groups, students, conservationists, researchers and enthusiasts to our sanctuary for a walk through. We also offer workshops on propagation, identification and conservation of cycads and other indigenous plants.
We welcome any projects that promotes the conservation of cycads and specialise in the Encephalartos genus.
