Pollinating Encephalartos munchii

There are many ways to effectively pollinate a cycad, and different factors call for different measures. We like to keep our pollination method as organic as we can, using nature itself to do the work it is intended to do.

Having enough munchii male cones available, we simply placed the male cone on top of the female cones and allow for the cycad weevils to carry pollen as they travel around in the cones. These little bugs cause the cycad no harm and have pollinated plants since the jurassic era.

E. munchii is an endangered species on the IUCN Red Data List and Cites Protected. The decline in habitat and the looming war in the area has recently put more pressure on the conservation of this species. We are proud and privileged to be able to contribute to the survival of this plant in any way.
